Salt Lake Peer Court

Salt Lake Peer Court

Salt Lake Peer Court serves as an alternative to the traditional juvenile justice system. Approximately 300 youth are referred by the Salt Lake City School District to Peer Court each year for offenses such as truancy, fighting, theft, vandalism, and tobacco. This intervention program consists of three parts:

  1. Peer Court Hearings
  2. Peer Mentoring
  3. Mediation.

Every Monday night, 120 youth volunteers review offenders' referral to peer court, their past grades, attendance records and determine an appropriate "contract." Some of these youth mentors were once offenders in the Peer Court system. Annually, youth and adult volunteers perform about 10,000 hours of service.
